I purchased a slice of Madagascar Petrified Wood at the Gem and Mineral show recently because of the striking pattern on its surface and thought it would make an interesting abstract.
I used artificial lighting for this image for a uniform illumination. Nikon gear, including a D610 and a 60mm macro lens with three extension tubes for maximum magnification. That left me with a image with thousands of tiny imperfections that are not usually noticeable when viewing the stone normally. Once removed (thank goodness I use a graphics tablet!) I applied a few more tweaks to balance the piece out. Post processing was accomplished using Photoshop and Lightroom.
